Laila's struggles

Here Hosseini uses figurative language to display Laila's emotions about her current life. Hosseini conveys that Laila is stuck in this never ending state of depression and sorrow. She had lost everything that ever matter to her. I feel that Hossseini's use of a ship wreck is very interesting. It is interesting because a ship holds a lot of people and cultures, but more importantly memories with sentimental values. To Laila her ship has sunk and the only survivor is her. She is trapped in the water, her home, where she can't move. She can't find any home and she is lost in her direction to sanity and serenity.
